2026.10.06: Essential Guide to Japan’s 2026 Tax-Free System Changes

Planning a shopping trip to Japan? Starting November 1, 2026, Japan is updating its tax-free shopping rules for international travellers. Here is what you need to know before your next trip.
How the New Refund Model Works
Under the updated system managed by Japan’s National Tax Agency, tourists will no longer receive immediate tax deductions at checkout.
In-Store Payment: Travellers pay full retail prices, including the 10% consumption tax, at eligible tax-free stores.
Airport Claims: Tax refunds are requested at departure airports. Refunds are transferred back via credit card (1–2 weeks) or bank transfer (2–4 weeks).

Japan - Tax-Free System Changes Starting November 1st
Important Rules for Shoppers
End of Sealed Packaging: The requirement to seal consumable items, such as cosmetics, medicines, and food in plastic bags is officially removed.
90-Day Departure Window: Tax-free eligibility requires departing Japan within 90 days of purchase.
Mandatory Customs Inspection: Customs officials will inspect tax-free goods and receipts at departure. Missing a single item from a receipt invalidates the refund for that entire receipt.
Quick Travel Tip
Arrive at the airport earlier on departure day to clear customs verification, and keep tax-free items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.
